Women's Day in Russia

8th of March is a special day in Russia, like in many other countries. But in Russia and (in some post Soviet countries) it is a holiday! This year it's on Thursday so we have a long weekend!

Like in other countries Women's Day is associated with fighting for women's rights, right to vote, emancipation. But also, it's a day that celebrates women. It is very common to give gifts, flowers to women. It became a tradition: kids make gifts from paper (often flowers) and gift it to mothers, teachers or girls.

Most common gift is flowers, more particularly tulips. But it can be anything. In the workplace, at the university or school usually men buy gifts together for all women. Like on 23rd of February, which is the defender of the fatherland day or Men's day now, women give gifts to men. It is a tradition as well.
